Wednesday 22nd January: Warehouse Project, Banh Mi & Stella the Cat

Tragically, the AO is coming to a close in a few days, and Melbourne will return to business as usual. The event has drawn in a couple of big names to watch the event of the year. Apparently, attendees in previous years have included Paul Mescal, Kylie Minogue, and Niall Horan. No sign of anyone of that calibre this year, clearly. Enjoy your celeb-spotting round the city, and read on for the latest from Melbourne this Wednesday.

The Headlines

  • One of the UK's favourite events, The Warehouse Project, is making it's second visit down under this April. After the success of their visits to Melbourne and Sydney last year, the event will be back in PICA on the 25th April. No sign of a line-up yet, but the likes of Fred Again, The Prodigy, and Basement Jaxx have been known to make an appearance, and Mall Grab was the headliner last year for the Aussie edition. Early bird tickets come out today, so join the queue.

  • Whether you had more than you care to admit on your gap yah in Asia, or have only discovered them since being in Aus, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't love this iconic sandwich. Melbourne treats us well in this department, with some of the best Asian food this side of the banana pancake trail. Here's a list of all the top unassuming spots to pick up this masterpiece next time you're on your lunch break. If you're really into your pork pâté and bread, check out Broadsheet's recent feature about why rising banh mi prices might actually be a good thing—perfect reading material when you next have one in hand.

  • We all know how harsh the Aussie sun can be, with most of us suffering at least one lesson-teaching sunburn since arriving. Sadly, out here, it's more than just some ugly tan lines that ruin your outfit, the strength of the UV puts us at a much higher risk of developing skin cancers like melanoma. Luckily, not only are sunny days more common than back home, but so is the availability of skin checks. This is a great read from someone who had their first check recently and thinks we all should, too. It only takes 15-20 mins, and most clinics offer at least a partial Medicare rebate. Wear that sun cream, kids.

Where to Eat and Drink

If the purse is still feeling pinched after silly season, today's pick is easy on the old budget. Fonda has six locations across Melbourne, cheffing up some delicious Mexican food. Most items on the menu are under $20, and it's the perfect place for a midweek marg, whatever the weather. Special mention the slaw in those burrito bowls—unsure what they're putting in there, but we haven't stopped thinking about it since. Did we mention it is also on First Table? So, 50% off for early diners, they're basically giving away the food.

Where to Live

Southside high-rise lovers, look away. This is a far cry from the rooftop with stunning skyline views and instead somewhere the Brunswickers reading this will find a lot of charm. The "stupidly big room" is fully furnished with all the usuals—unconfirmed whether that includes the music corner and four-tier stacked laptop stand. We're not yet convinced by the eclectic mix of kitchen cupboards, severely overgrown garden, and green leather couch, but it does sound like you'll have a lot of fun.

Core selling point: cute cat called Stella.

Where to Work

This company are hiring for film and television extras, with opportunities on offer to feature in TV commercials, feature films, series and more. They are taking on people with no experience at all, and are looking for all shapes and sizes. Offering casual work and pay from $25 per hour to a quite frankly unbelievable $1500 per hour, if you think you've got what it takes to be on the big screen, then head over to one of their information sessions.

Where to Go

It's been a while since we've given a nod to one of the most famous markets in the city, Queen Victoria Night Market. This is an absolute Melbourne rite of passage, and if you haven't visited yet, we might get your visa revoked. There’s always a interesting schedule of entertainment on offer, with a magician, hula hooper, and robot on the lineup for tonight. The food stand queues (and prices) can be daunting, but it's definitely worth a visit for a midweek venture out of the house.

Match Point Pick

Well done to those of you who stayed up until 1 am for yesterday's pick—worth every single minute of missed sleep. Today, we've got the last remaining quarter finals in both the men's and women's draws, and there's a big chance to progress for a few unexpected names. Our match to watch is Madison Keys taking on Elina Svitolina who have both produced some excellent tennis to get them to this stage. Part of the fun is that it really could go either way, so choose your fighter and get your chants ready (not during a point though, of course).
