Wednesday 29th January: Matcha Fog, Flight Sale & Gelato Royalty

The definitive ranking of Australia's top 100 craft beers has just landed, and it's the perfect excuse to try some new brews while you're out here. A few are from Melbourne breweries too, so you can start ticking them off without going far. In the meantime, have a read of what's going on today in Melbourne—beer in hand recommended.

The Headlines

  • We know how you all feel about a flight sale, and we are back with yet another. Jetstar's latest tempting offer is a 'return for free' offer on flights to Japan and South Korea. The flight sale starts this morning and runs until Friday, so if you're feeling spontaneous and fancy a trip between May and November, then get booking. Flying long-haul with Jetstar could be just worth it at these prices.

  • Everyone's favourite sandwich deli, Hector's, is branching out to open its own bakery. This new spot, opening early March in Richmond will be selling, of course amongst other treats, Turkish bread, pastries, morning buns, and their signature potato bun used for their fried chicken sandwiches. They're aiming to do things a little differently, so we can't wait to see what they chef up.

  • As the Gen Z version of love-it-or-hate-it Marmite, matcha is very in vogue right now. If you've jumped on the hype train and don't think it tastes like grass stirred into milk, here’s where to find the best matchas in Melbourne. From matcha mixed with various berries or chocolate to the mysterious "matcha fog", some of these delicious-looking green concoctions are even enough to turn a matcha hater’s head.

Where to Eat and Drink

From humble hole-in-the-wall beginnings in Hong Kong, Tim Ho Wan has grown into a Michelin-starred dim sum restaurant. Now, you can experience this dumpling heaven at the new Melbourne branch on Bourke St in the CBD. Its BBQ pork dumplings are world-famous, and at just $10.80 a portion, you can finally eat fancy on a budget.

Where to Live

Jess and Trae are so desperate to stand out from the crowd amidst the Melbourne housing chaos that they produced a four-minute video to sell themselves and their flat. We're sold by it tbh and it seems the rest of Fairy Floss is too. The successful candidate must be able to tolerate their humour, be over 25, not homophobic, provide compliments, and live a clean life because Jess won't pick up after you like your mummy—hilarious. Surely send a YouTube video back to them to apply, it's only right.

Where to Work

Aussie gelato royalty, Gelato Messina, has a couple of roles available at the moment, and the perks are that you can eat all the gelato you can cope with. Their Brunswick store is on the hunt for a front-of-house scooper to work 28+ hours a week who can be their "little scoop of happiness". The Fitzroy location is also on the lookout, if back-of-house is more your scene, they are after an ice cream maker who can spend their days churning away, preferably someone with some kitchen experience.

Where to Go

Hotel Nacional is making going out drinking as a coeliac a little bit more enjoyable. The Mexican-inspired rooftop has teamed up with Two Bays Beer to craft its very own gluten-free Cerveza. To celebrate, they're hosting a launch party tonight and tomorrow, filled with $10 pints of the wheat-free stuff and free canapés (gluten-free of course). A welcome addition for those who want to enjoy a night out without having to deep-dive into the menu every time.
