Wednesday 8th January: Free Caribou Set, OJ Controversy & Interested Conversations
Watch your backs if you're on the beach with your favourite Kmart gazebo this week—the Aussie prime minister is after you. He effectively called beachgoers using them selfish. And we thought Aussie politics were meant to me unproblematic. Here is the latest for today in Melbourne, we hope you're hiding in the shade under your gazebo reading this.
The Headlines
If you missed Caribou's set last week at PICA, or if you enjoyed it so much that you want more, you're in luck. The Canadian artist has announced another set in Fed Square on Friday at 7pm, and the best bit is it's completely free. After his lap of Australia on tour last week, he obviously decided once round the country wasn't enough. It's a rare chance to catch the popular artist, so we're giving you plenty of warning to clear your diaries for this one.
The latest victim of middle-aged people kicking off about nothing on social media is the beloved Republica in St Kilda. A recent visitor took to Reddit to complain that fish and chips by the beach set them back $34, and we can't help but think "robbery" is a little extreme. We’re obsessed with the replies dragging their choice to pair the beach meal with a glass of orange juice, "orange juice with fish and chips, I’ve never seen this in almost 40 years on this green earth"—love.
Back in November, The Espy teased us with a new addition to the iconic venue. Well, it's finally been revealed that the Sunroom has taken over the former Ichi Ni next door and is open for action. Boasting space for 252 people, hanging plants, lightly painted concrete walls, and stunning tiled tables, it's the newest place to enjoy a summer spritz. There's even a temporary roof for when Melbs treats us to a bit of unexpected rain.
Where to Eat and Drink
Taking a stand against the middle-aged redditer who spoke ill of a Melbourne favourite, today's pick is, of course, Republica itself. This summer-friendly spot on the beachfront in St Kilda is in fact not expensive at all if you know when to go. Their Wednesday steak night is a bargain at just $30 for a porterhouse steak and trimmings. Get there early to enjoy the 5-6pm Spritz O'Clock hour where you can get $12 Aperols and $30 Aperol pitchers, so take that, boomer. It's a great atmosphere and the perfect place to spend a long summer night.
Where to Live
If you're looking for a gorgeous Richmond flat to call home, we've got just the place for you. The flat is stunning, and so is the dog in the pics—no word on whether the pooch is included, but you'd assume so. The building itself has literally everything you need, a pool, co-working space, gym, dining room, and a huge Coles underneath. We've had many a BBQ on that roof, and trust us, you want to live there.
Core selling point: reformer studio in the comfort of your own home.
Where to Work
Nike on Chapel St claims to be Australia's longest-serving partnered store—who knew? Luckily for you, it's currently hiring for retail staff who can take part in "interested conversations". As part of the application, you have to submit a one-to-three-minute intro video about yourself. If you can bear the embarrassment, there might be a discounted pair of trainers or two in your near future. Good luck filming that if you live with flatmates.
Where to Go
It can be tough making new friends in a new place, and Melbourne Working Holiday Girls have the answer. They are hosting a friend-making social tonight at Bobbie Peel's in North Melbourne, where you can effectively speed date for your new girl group. Tickets are $20, including a drink and some icebreakers in the private area at the venue. This one is for over-25s, but keep an eye out for other events if you're lucky enough to be younger than that.
