Friday 29th November: Black Friday, scotch eggs & deadly horses

Happy Black Friday to all those who celebrate, try your best to not get into a scrap in Big W over a discounted kettle. Here’s how to spend your weekend in Melbourne.

And for those waiting for yesterday’s answer—forget snakes and spiders… horses were in fact named as the most deadly in Australia.

The Headlines

  • We know the 417 readers love a flight sale, so we’re back with another. This time it's Virgin Australia, offering a classic Black Friday sale with both domestic and international flights on offer. If you've been wanting to tick a trip to Uluru off the Aus bucket list, you can get there for just $119, along with return flights to NZ and Fiji also nicely discounted. The sale ends Wednesday, so there is time to gather the troops to get a spontaneous weekend away in the diary.

  • Melbourne's answer to Berghain is making a long-anticipated return for those of you missing a little European tech. The Wool Store is a heritage-listed building out in Footscray, filled with just about as much culture as Australia can get, and Untitled Group is back to celebrate its 10th anniversary in this very spot. The team behind Pitch, Wildlands, and Beyond The Valley are set to announce the latest lineup on the 2nd of December, so watch this space if you're looking for somewhere to let your hair down.

  • Opa! Today's cuisine of focus comes in the shape of souvlakis and mezze platters. No one can say no to a weekend Greek treat, and luckily for us, Melbourne does it pretty well. Here's a list of the best places to find a gryos with the Mamma Mia soundtrack playing in the background. Our personal favourite is actually Chapel Street's Meat and Greek which doesn't even make the list—Eat Club, if you know, you know.

Where to Go on Friday

The Royal Exhibition Building Centre in Carlton puts on a great weekend market, and this weekend it's The Big Design Market. This whopping hall will host over 250 stalls offering homeware, clothes, prints, jewellery, stationary, and more—alongside some tasty street food stands of course so you won't have to go hungry while you browse and shop. Ideal to get your Christmas shopping boxed off.

Where to Go on Saturday

Head down to Section 8 (our favourite CBD bar) for a Saturday night boogie. Charles Eddy and Crozier will take over the dancefloor until 1 am, with free entry for everyone. Get down as early as possible to avoid the torturous queue and make sure you’re one of the smug ones on the inside. P.S for all the Bali lovers out there, they serve Bintang if you’re after your fix.

Where to Go on Sunday

The world's largest digital art gallery, The Lume, hosts immersive yoga sessions on Sundays, and it looks like quite an experience. You can take part in yoga surrounded by an amazing wraparound digital screen in what they call a 'meditative landscape'. It's set to be a sensory experience blending yoga, pilates, and fitness. You'll have to have a sensible Saturday night in if you're going to drag yourself to yoga in the CBD at 8am—but if you make it, we'll be proud of you.

Where to Eat and Drink

The CBD’s famous laneways offer many hidden gems, and Max on Hardware is in amongst it. The laneways offer tiny shops, boutique stores and hole-in-the-wall cafes, with each one being different from the last. Head to Hardware lane for a more upmarket experience, and make Max on Hardware your choice for dinner. The restaurant setting spills out into the cobbled stone laneway, creating a gorgeous European atmosphere. Max hosts live music every night along with authentic Australian-Italian cuisine.

Where to Live

Obviously, St Kilda Beach is the only place you want to be this Christmas. Well, now you can be right on the doorstep from the minute you wake up. This sublet will take you right through to the 3rd of Jan, so you can even stumble home from New Year's Eve at The Espy too. Your housemate for the month would be a pro windsurfer, it doesn't get more Aussie than that.

Core selling point: huge vat of vanish for all those stains.

Where to Work

One for the lucky car owners out there, you can put those wheels to good use—DoorDash are hiring for Delivery Drivers. All you need is to get a quick ABN number and you're good to go. Picking up people's late night takeaways on a snoozy Monday night is an ideal way to save up some summer pocket money. No need to worry if you haven't managed to clean out your car in a while either—DoorDash says on the job ad that they literally couldn't care less about the state of your vehicle, perfect.
