Tuesday 15th October: butter chicken, ABBA & Carrie Bradshaw

There's talk of ABBA Voyage popping up in Melbourne, so if it's good enough for Björn and co, it's good enough for us. Here's what going on across the city today, Voulez-Vous?

The Headlines

  • Coffee, bargains & a good old list seems to be the holy trinity of a 417 reader. So here's a roundup of the best places in the city to grab a coffee for under $4. With hotspots across various suburbs like Carleton and South Yarra, there's surely one you can try out on your commute or lunchtime stroll. It's cheaper than making one at home for that price really, isn't it?

  • So the Brat rumours were true, and Charli XCX is set to headline Laneway festival next Feb. In more exciting news, Olivia Dean is also on the lineup (Australia tour dates incoming surely!). Presale starts at 10am this morning and it’s your only chance to grab the cheapest ticket at $189 so be quick.

  • If you didn't meet the love of your life in Noosa Nomads as expected, check out the "Carrie Bradshaw Index" for the cheapest places to rent as a single person in Melbourne. Kingsville, Burnley and unsurprisingly St Kilda West top the list of spots you can afford a lovely bachelor(ette) pad all to yourself.

Where to Eat and Drink

The Aussies are known for their amazing Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine, but a decent Indian is where they can be known to fall short. After searching far and wide, Pint Size Indian in Carlton is a hidden gem that shouldn't be gatekept. This cosy spot has friendly staff, a large menu full of classic Indian faves, and extensive vegan and veggie options. You won't find a better butter chicken in the city.

Where to Live

This is the most Brunswick flat you will ever see. The dining room is in a roller-door garage with a leather sofa facing out on the road, graffiti on the walls, and fairy lights throughout. We'd love to know how many decks are floating about the place, our guess is at least three.

Core selling point: bench-height desk with a desk-height chair.

Where to Work

Not quite as exciting as the Santa's Helper job from yesterday, but for once, an employer specifically looking for working-holidayers, never thought we'd see the day! An accounting firm in Melbourne is hiring for accounting roles lasting up to the sweet spot of 6 months, so if you have any experience in accounts or payroll, it sounds like they'll snap you up.

Where to Go

It's the final week of Six the Musical in Melbourne, and tickets are selling out fast. Given 5 stars by Time Out, this camp take on the tale of Henry VIII's wives is fast becoming a classic musical, and we have a real soft spot for it. Being held at the Comedy Theatre in the CBD, it's not quite the West End or Broadway, but it’s as close as Australia gets.
