Tuesday 22nd October: cheap flights, laser quest & fennel crema
With Australia just named the world’s most AI-addicted country, hands up if you used ChatGPT to get your work done while lying in the sun yesterday. Here is our round up for this sweaty Tuesday.
The Headlines
It's the final day of Jetstar's big two-day flight sale, where you could jet off for a sunny weekend to the Gold Coast or Byron Bay for just $26. It's a members-only sale, and a membership costs $65 for the year, which could be a worthy investment if you're a frequent flyer (or just good respect for your friendship group to bag a bargain holiday).
As if Melbourne didn't have enough rooftop bars already, a new gem has popped up in Cremorne just in time for summer. Italian-inspired Amatrice boasts seating for about 80 people across a red marble table donned restaurant, city-facing main deck and an outdoor space, and it looks absolutely delightful. It would be rude not to try the food, with mini lasagne and parmigiana snacks being the stars of the show.
What Melbourne lacks in looks, it certainly makes up for in personality—St Kilda we're looking at you. Luckily, there are plenty of gorgeous spots just a short drive from the city for when you need your Australian beauty fix. Find a friend with a car—RIP Uber Carshare—and head out for a day trip to one of these stunning hike spots. Currawong Falls Track is top of our hit list, if the views aren't enough for you, the promise of wallabies surely is.
Where to Eat and Drink
It wouldn't be Tuesday without a taco, and this week's pick is Mesa Verde, offering $5 tacos paired with $10 frozen margs (if you make it for happy hour, 4pm-6pm). This high-end Mexican-inspired eatery in the CBD would usually break the bank, but not on Taco Tuesdays. Where else can you get something with fancy ingredients like ox cheek, cochinita pibil, or fennel crema for just a fiver?
Where to Live
For those struggling to find somewhere to live long-term or heading off on some summer travels soon, this room tucked away in a hidden CBD laneway is available from October 24th to November 26th. You'd be sharing with two students but are blessed with your own bathroom—complete with a "more espresso, less depresso" poster—so how bad can it really be?
Core selling point: the inconspicuous object at the back of the living room—desperate to know what it is.
Where to Work
Got a shining RSA that's going to waste? The National in Richmond is looking for new bartenders, and if you're really keen, supervisors too. It's a dog-friendly pub, so you can bank on a few puppy cuddles to get you through your shifts. You never know, if things go really well, you might be able to try your hand at hosting the pub quiz, too.
Where to Go
Today only, Funlab venues across the city are offering games for just $8 as part of their 'Day of Fun' in support of a youth mental health charity. Including bowling, darts, mini golf, laser tag and escape rooms just to name a few, there is lots of fun to be had and all for a good cause. There are 12 venues to choose from in Melbourne, find your closest one here. We won't tell anyone if you want to take your Hinge date there to make it look like you're splashing the cash.
